The observatory and you.

Four ways to work with the base. Explore it, measure a theme, ask for an analysis, contribute.

01 · Explore

The whole base, with a key.

Transcripts, classified sentences and comments are not published on this site. The explorer opens them to research projects, with a personal key and an access tier.

  1. 1Filter by channel, country, date, classifier, orientation.
  2. 2Search transcripts and comments, by words or by meaning.
  3. 3Read the sentences with their video, channel, date and labels.
  4. 4Export the result, according to the key’s access tier.
  • The transcripts of 6.5k videos, speaking turn by speaking turn, with timestamps.
  • The classified sentences 700k sentences with their political label, their nine themes and the public figures named.
  • The comments 79k dated comments, classified as political or not, with their author’s pseudonym.
  • Four access tiers from metadata to the full corpus; the API and the R and Python clients talk to the same tables.

02 · Measure

A theme, measured in the corpus.

You work on a subject. We measure where it appears in the political videos, month by month and country by country, who talks about it and with which arguments, and we deliver the series, the videos and the excerpts, with the computation base. A live example, computed on the corpus.

Videos whose transcript mentions the “51st state”, by month 21 videos since 1 November 2024
FranceQuebecUnited States

Number of transcribed videos whose transcript contains the phrase, by month of publication and country of the channel (hover a column for the share of the month’s transcribed videos). Full-text search, French dictionary; a measure of presence, not of position.

A series of measures

The presence of the subject month by month, by country and by orientation, on an equal footing, with its base and its limits.

Who talks about it, with which arguments

The channels and orientations that carry the subject, the public figures named about it and the arguments found in the sentences.

The videos and the excerpts

The transcribed sentences that carry the subject, with the video, the channel, the date and the timestamp, to quote.

Request this measure Search it yourself, on request

To run the search yourself in the transcripts and comments, you need an explorer key. Write to us with a description of your project.

03 · Ask

A question, an answer computed on the corpus.

We compute the answer on the base and deliver it with the method, the base and its limits. Lead time and terms depend on the request; public research projects come first.

A series

The weight of a theme or a public figure over time, by orientation or by country, on an equal footing (mean share per video).

table · chart

A comparison

Two orientations, two countries or two periods side by side on a theme, with the gaps and how solid they are.

method note

An event

Before and after a date. What rises, what falls, who talks about it, with the videos and sentences that show it.

before · after

A channel

A channel’s trajectory since it joined the corpus. Volumes, audience, themes, public figures named, removals.

portrait

Excerpts

The transcribed sentences that carry an argument, with the video, the channel, the date and the timestamp.

quotable list

An extract of the base

The tables that answer your question, filtered and documented, delivered as CSV according to your project’s access tier.

04 · Contribute

The corpus grows on proposals.

A channel, its country, its orientation and what it brings to the study. That is how channels enter the corpus. Joint projects are welcome.

Suggest a channel

Its address, its country, its orientation in your view, and why it matters. The team codes it and adds it if it fits the frame.

Suggest

Annotate, train

New themes, a new classifier, shared annotation. The method and the tools are the project’s, the reliability is published.

Propose a collaboration

Compare, teach, publish

Cross-country comparisons, courses built on the data, joint articles. The base is made to be worked on together.

Our limits

No video is redistributed. The player points to the platform. The text of transcripts and comments stays under controlled access, under fair dealing for research (s. 29 of the Copyright Act), never redistributed as such nor for commercial purposes.
