The people named

The public figures, parties and media of a closed list, recognised in the sentences and counted video by video.

  1. 1The names of people, parties and media are spotted in the sentences.
  2. 2Only the names of a closed list of public figures are kept.
  3. 3A private person named in a video is never counted.
  4. 4Each name is counted video by video, by month and by orientation.
Public figures mentioned

A predefined list of public figures and organisations

Public figures, parties, organisations, media and countries are counted from a predefined list of 240 entries, searched for in the transcripts. A full-text search finds candidate sentences, then a regular expression confirms the name and rules out namesakes: “Le Maire” is only counted with “Bruno”, and “Le Pen” on its own is assigned to Marine Le Pen, except after “Jean-Marie” or “Maréchal”.

The people on the list are all public figures: French, Quebec and foreign political leaders, and well-known figures from the media, intellectual life or business. Private individuals mentioned in videos, such as victims or witnesses, are never counted. The automatic named-entity recognition of the method is not used here: it too often confused pronouns and proper names. On the English pages, foreign names appear in their usual English form (Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu).
